Why send your resume to a recruiter in this market?
While speaking to a commercial project manager recently commercial construction jobs here in Arizona he made an interesting comment. He told me that he hasn’t received a call from a construction headhunter for a while now.
I was surpised. Here’s why a construction recruiter should have your resume right now, even though they may not have a job for you to fill until the market turns around.
Commercial construction recruiters who have a good bank of resumes will be able to fill job orders quickly thus, they will receive more job orders from clients and build client trust. This scenario is good for construction job seekers.
Let’s say I get an order to fill a position for a commercial project manager. After I get orders to fill jobs for project managers I usually get a follow up order to fill commercial jobs for superintendents. If you are the superintendent and you don’t have your resume with me I don’t know that you are looking and there for can’t help you.
Be sure that you have your resume with a good recruiter who continues to work during the economic downturn. Recruiters who can respond quickly to fill client needs will flourish.
Make your resume stand out to a construction recruiter.
I’ve looked at least 200 resumes today all for Superintendents, Project Manager and, Project Engineers in commercial construction.
One things stands out among most of them.
They don’t catch my eye in the proper way. Here’s why; I’m working to fill a position for a large client. The client is looking for people to fill all three of the commercial construction jobs mentioned and they have specified a high end rage that they want to see among completed projects and work experience.
A few things you SHOULD DO when responding to job boards.
A couple of times a year our company runs an advertisement on internet job boards. Most of the time we source construction executives ourselves and find great commercial construction candidates through referrals. We pay handsomely for referrals too.
I am always shocked by how some people handle themselves when submitting their resume through job boards.
Here are some things I recommend you do when submitting your resume to recruiters or companies through any job board:
- Read the entire post before submitting your resume. Read the post with one thing in mind. What are the companies asking for (experience, education, resume format, any other specifics). For example, we can’t open MS Office files unless they are in 2003 formats or older and we don’t like PDF files. It clearly states this on our ad.
- Be sure to name your resume file with your name and your job title. I’ve received lots of emails through the job board (200 resumes a day) and I can’t take the time to look at resumes that are titled “Current Resume” I figure that person doesn’t think about the needs of an employer and I look at their resume last.
